Dye Mad Yarns is Hiring!

Job Overview

Dye Mad Yarns started in a kitchen in May of 2020 and has grown to a storefront with a team we’re hoping to grow! Our yarns combine a love of history, politics, quirks, camp, and absurd Americana with a keen sense of color and dye yarns that highlight the fun, whimsy, and weirdness in our inspirational subject: Ohio and the Midwest. Whether its landmarks, food, culture, politics, experiences, or cryptids, Dye Mad is a love letter to the Midwest and its eccentricities.

We are currently growing our team to support the growth we’ve seen in our business and are looking for what we’re calling our next “Dye Staffer”. The Dye Staffer’s purpose is to support the Dye Mad Yarns team both in the dye studio, the retail shop, and at festivals across the region.

The ideal candidate has strong problem solving skills, an ability to recognize what needs to be done and then doing it, can communicate effectively interpersonally, and a deep love of all things wool and fiber.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Washing dyed yarn, preparing undyed yarn to be dyed, and eventually, learn how to dye our recipes for yarn and create your own yarn colorways.
  • Running the register - we use shopify and it’s a relatively easy setup. All of our yarns are labeled and if you have any questions about what products are what, you can ask us anytime.
  • Answer questions about yarn! We’re working on a guide for our staff and you’ll learn a lot just by being in-shop with us, but having a basic understanding of yarn weights and how fibers work will go far in talking to customers about their projects.
  • Packing and shipping orders. We take in a good amount of online orders, which have to be dyed (if we do not have the colorway/base in stock), washed, labeled, packed, labeled for shipping and readied for the post office.
  • Preparing for shows - we do a decent amount of traveling for pop up yarn and fiber festivals, which includes a lot of packing, then unpacking, setting up, then packing again, then unpacking again.

Responsible to: Yourself, and also your coworkers. We do our best to hold each other accountable and aim for a collaborative work environment. :)

Qualifications:

  • Has an interest in yarn and fiber, and knows how to knit, crochet, weave, spin, or another fiber craft.
  • Excellent customer service skills - this is at least partially public facing, and we expect you to be kind in interactions.
  • Collaboration-minded with a willingness to contribute to various aspects of the business.
  • Self-motivated with ability to work independently.
  • Flexible and adaptable to a dynamic work environment.
  • Able to lift up to 40 lbs - this is a very physical job.
  • Able to safely handle boiling water.
  • Able to stand most of the work day.

This job averages 20-25 hours per week, potentially expanding when we move to a larger store front.

What we offer:

  • Everyone at the shop is paid at the same rate - we are currently offering $18/hour.
  • Paid time off, including the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
  • An opportunity to design your own colorways, join the business as a partner, and have an equitable way to influence and steer the business alongside your coworkers.
  • Opportunities for travel.
  • A (we think) fun work environment, with opportunities to learn and grow in retail, without taking ourselves too seriously.
  • The chance to reach a new audience, if you happen to be interested in pattern design.
  • Potential for increased compensation packages as the business grows and we’re able to offer more.
  • Free yarn!
