How Does a River Overflow it's Banks?

Maya Lin! An artist after our own hearts! Lin describes herself as being  bridge where opposites meet. Art and Science. Art and Architecture. East and West. Many of her works are large scale environmental pieces designed to make us more aware of our surroundings.

In the case of the installations at the Wex, Lin focused on the long history of flooding of the Ohio River. Depicted with glass beads, the piece spans a massive area of the space, flowing up the walls to show the tributaries connected to the river basin. There's an adjoining piece that represents the aquifers, made by hammering more than 81,000 pins into the walls.

A Note From Ashley - I love this one for a few reasons. I've always been drawn to the large scale, environmental pieces by neolithic era peoples across our planet. Even with modern equipment and mapping, there's still a sort of mysterious pull to something hard to imagine creating when you can only see the full picture from high above. How Does a River Overflow it's Banks? adds an extra element for me because you can stand right there and see just how massive the work is, knowing full well that it's a fraction of the environment it represents. I think I'll always love bodies of water thanks to growing up so close to oceans and rivers and lakes and really enjoy seeing that representation in a physical piece.
