Beast of Busco

In 1898, Oscar Funk of Churubusco, Indiana claimed he saw a giant snapping turtle in a seven acre lake on his farm. He told other about it, but decided to drop the matter. However, in July 1948, two other citizens claimed they had also seen a giant snapping turtle (upwards of 500 pounds) while fishing on the lake! The farmer who owned the land at that time, Gale Harris, also claimed to have seen the creature. Six months later, a reporter from Fort Wayne sent out the story on the national wire services and the turtle became world famous. He was so popular that local police had to come in to do traffic control. Despite the hype, and the month long search for Oscar the turtle (so named after the original owner of the farm), he was never found.  

His memory lives on though! Churubusco hosts Turtle Days each June in memory, and yes, it includes turtle races.
