Goose Granny Square

Our first crochet-along starts today! It is granny square themed! The only rule is that whatever you make  needs to be out of granny squares. You pick your yarn, project, and pattern. Obviously we needed a goose granny square, so we made one!


Materials Needed

4mm hook
Yarn in white, orange/yellow, black and blue
Tapestry needle

Terms Used
MC - Magic Circle
DC - Double Crochet
HDC - Half Double Crochet
FLO - Front Loop Only
BLO - Back Loop Only
FO - Finish Off

Main Square

In white,
Rnd 1 - MC, Ch. 2, dc x 9. Slip stitch closed.
Rnd 2 - Ch.2 DC in the same stitch. Inc in each stitch around. Slip stitch closed.


Now we’re going to build the neck and head from the last round.
Row 1 - Ch. 1. In the FLO, sc in the next 4 stitches. Ch. 1 and turn
Row 2 -  dec x 2, ch 1 and turn
Row 3 -  sc x 2, ch 1 and turn
Row 4 - inc x 2, ch 1 and turn
Row 5 - sc x 4, ch 1 and turn
Row 6 - dec x 2
Row 7 - Loosely, slip stitch around the edge of the goose and FO with a long tail for stitching the edge down.

Going back to Rnd 2 (the last circular round), attach your blue yarn to the Back loop 2nd stitch from the beginning of round 2 (the 2nd stitch from the right side of the goose neck).
Rnd 3 - Ch 2. In the BLO, DC in the same stitch and the next stitch. Repeat (inc, dc in the next stitch) around to the end. Slip stitch closed.
Rnd 4 - ch 2. DC in the same stitch. DC in the next 2 stitches. Repeat (inc, dc in the next two stitches) around to the end. Slip stitch closed. 

Rnd 5 - Ch 1. Sc x 3, hdc, dc, (dc x 2, ch 2, dc x 2) in the next stitch. Repeat [dc, hdc, sc x 5, hdc, dc, (dc x 2, ch 2, dc x 2) in the next stitch] 3 times. DC in the next stitch, hdc, sc x 2, slip stitch closed.
Rnds 6-8 - Ch 2. DC in each stitch and (dc x 2, ch 2, dc x 2) in each chain space. 
FO and weave in ends.

Feet (make 2)
Ch 4. Loosely slip stitch in the 2nd stitch from the hook and the next two stitches. Ch 2, dc x 3 in the same stitch as your last slip stitch. Slip stitch in the same stitch and the other two stitches along the back side of the chain.  FO with a tail for sewing.

Wings (make 2)
Ch 7. Slip stitch in the 2nd chain from the hook. Sc, hdc, dc x 2, hdc. FO with a tail for sewing.

Sunglasses
Ch 7. Slip stitch in the 2nd chain from the hook. Hdc x 2 in the next stitch. Slip stitch in the next 2 chains. Hdc x 2 in the next stitch. Slip stitch and FO with a tail for sewing.

Beak
Ch 4. 2 dc in the 3rd chain from the hook. FO with tail for sewing.

Sew your pieces into place on the goose. I opted to only sew the leg portions of the feet so that the feet themselves flop.
