July! Halfway through summer! The cusp of State Fair season!

I don’t know if you would have guessed it, but we are not what you would consider… nationalists. Not a huge fan of jingoism, militarism, warmongering, or… fireworks, really, honestly. But from time to time, we do love to host a party, especially with a goofy-ass theme. Enter Indeprawndence Day. You read that right, in our house, we celebrate shrimp (and crabs and lobsters and really any shellfish).

For the last few years, Kelley has occasionally hosted a 4th of July party they call “Indeprawndence Day”, which is a big low-country boil. If you’re not from the low country, this is a big pot filled with corn, red skin potatoes, andouille sausage, shellfish, and spices. It’s a fun communal meal and for some of my friends, it’s the only time during the year they break their vegetarianism (they make a pot without the andouille for them).

So this month’s color is meant to evoke the beach - sand and saltwater. Or shrimps and boiling water.
