As part of our love letter to the Midwest, we've grown fond of the Edmund Fitzgerald, and this month marks the 50th Anniversary of the tragedy. A lot of things have changed since the ship went down with her entire crew. Crews no longer go out in storms and the stubborn, invincible sailor stereotype has ended. Before the Mighty Fitz went down, there was a commercial shipping wreck every week for a century. Mariners never wanted to suffer another loss and have worked diligently to improve safety standards. And it worked! The Fitz was the last wreck of a commercial shipping vessel on Lake Superior.
