January '25 YOTM: Pretty Pickles
$24.00I feel like here is where I would typically say WELCOME TO MY ANNUAL COLOR OF THE YEAR RANT, but I think this year, maybe it’s a little trite. A little passe. Am I really going to say anything I haven’t said about Pantone and how out of touch their choices are from year to year? Probably not. I think I might have even liked Mocha Mousse for 2024, but let’s be real: the color of the year is green. Brat girl summer. Wicked. The Substance. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Pickles.
You could make an argument that Mocha Mousse is the color for 2025 and all the greens I’m listing are from 2024, and to that I say: Well, Peach Fuzz also wasn’t the color for 2024, and also, time is fake. We’re specifically leaning into pickle green for 2025, and this color is called Pretty Pickles. If you’re not on TikTok (wow, couldn’t be me), maybe you’re on the side where people are mixing edible glitter into the pickle jars, with an unsettling audio talking about PrEtTy PiCkLeS… or maybe you’re not, but you sure will be soon (ominous).
Unironically, pickles were trending in 2024, especially amongst Gen Z and the chronically online (as well as specifically with my Gen Alpha seven year old, who enjoys his “I’m a Big Dill” shirt). Last summer, there was also a big interest in cucumber salads, thanks for a creator on TikTok. Are you someone who keeps up with the “hot vegetable of the moment” or other food trends? I remember when kale became a thing, when it had previously just been decor for the buffet at Pizza Huts. I also definitely have a saved article where radishes are called “trash” from several years ago, but people were all about the very ~French~ radish and butter sandwiches recently.
Food trends are interesting to me from an economical standpoint - what drives what we choose to eat? The interest in “tinned fish” and fermented foods is a curious one to me. We’re all about the salty, the vinegary, the briny, the… foods that will last a long time on the shelf if we can’t get access to more or fresh foods.
Anyway, I guess that’s my Color of the Year rant for 2025. We can make our own COTY, Pantone doesn’t have a monopoly on it. It’s PRETTY PICKLES. And we hope you love it!!
