March '22 YOTM: Be the Crow You Wish to See in the World

by Dye Mad Yarns

This month’s color is inspired by crows, ravens, whatever your favorite member of the corvid family may be. A few months ago, in one of my fiber arts group, I saw an incredible crocheted shawl that had been made in black and (I think) grey yarn to make it look like crows’ wings and I was like 🤯. I knew I had to make a yarn that was reminiscent of crows’ wings. If you’re interested in doing something similar, I’d recommend the Feather Wings Shawl by Megan Lapp for crocheters and the Wingspan Shawl by Kyle Van for knitters.

Honestly, I’d thought I’d be able to do a better job of combining Frida Kahlo and crows, because SURELY there would be a painting that Kahlo had done with crows or ravens, but no!! I completely pulled that out of my ass! There is A LOT of fan art out in the world of Frida Kahlo with crows/ravens, but she herself did not actually include them in any of her work! This does make sense in some regard, because the American Crow, isn’t endemic to Mexico, but the common Raven is. To me, Frida Kahlo seems like the kind of person who would have left shiny treats and befriended the ravens in her neighborhood, but maybe that’s just because that’s the kind of person I hope to be.

So this month’s color is BE THE CROW YOU WISH TO BE IN THE WORLD.
