Emerald
$6.00For the month of May, we have Emerald! It's the traditional gemstone for May, but also for the tropical Zodiac sign of Cancer for some reason.
The word emerald derived from a few different sources, probably most directly from a Semitic word for "shine", but Old French and Middle English's esmeraude and emeraude mean "green gem". Straightforward enough!
Emeralds are found all over the world, but Colombia is the largest producer (upwards of 95%), followed by Zambia.
Traditional alchemical lore ascribes several uses and characteristics to emeralds:
The virtue of the Emerald is to counteract poison. They say that if a venomous animal should look at it, it will become blinded. The gem also acts as a preservative against epilepsy; it cures leprosy, strengthens sight and memory, checks copulation, during which act it will break, if worn at the time on the finger.
Our Emerald is saturated, tonal green with hints of yellow green throughout its tones. With this yarn in particular, we are recommending washing with a color catcher in the basin.
For pairings, we recommend Taurus and Gemini (obviously), Beltane, Jackalope, Grandpa's Cheese Barn, Pop, Yeah No, Pink Drink, Matcha Latte (and really most of our tonals).
