The Devil

Idle hands are the devil's playthings, so it seems fair to start out the year with keeping your hands busy with the Devil's yarn. 

In most interpretations of the Devil card, the Devil is depicted in their Baphomet form, half human, half goat. In the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith deck, the devil has back wings and an inverted pentagram on their forehead. Our individual decks at the shop vary - Bryce has the Devil making out with a firefly larva (Rust Belt Arcana), Kelley has the Beast (Over the Garden Wall) and a hand holding both a knitting needle & a crochet hook (Stitcher's Tarot), Chelsea has a three eyed demon cat (Weird Cat Tarot), and Ashley's has the most traditional devil (Yarn Tarot). 

Each deck varies in their interpretation of the Devil card, but it typically isn't a joyous card to pull in a reading. Upright, the most common interpretations of the Devil include themes of excess, addiction, obsession, oppression, powerlessness, and limitations. The Devil can represent the systems and things in our lives that have power over us and are holding us back. 

Reversed, the Devil can mean freedom, independence, revelation, release, reclaiming power and control. 

There are also themes of materialism and playfulness in the Devil, so it's not all bad! It represents Capricorn in the western Zodiac and is considered an Earth card. If anything, the Devil can be a warning to reign yourself in, lest you overwhelm yourself with the excesses. It's preceded by Temperance (representing Sagittarius, a sign sometimes known for its own excesses lol), and there's something very on-the-nose (in a fun way) of the Devil and its excesses being the sign of dry January. There's a careful balance here and the Devil is here to push you whatever way you think you need to be pushed.
