Found in the dense forests and winding trails of Appalachia, this low-growing herb with perennial stems is also able to grow in frequently disturbed areas, including ground that is frequently mowed or walked upon. Despite its resilience, it is considered to be rare as it is generally not found outside Appalachia.

These lovely, often overlooked plants have violet flowers and heart-shaped leaves both packed with vitamins and minerals. In fact, a handful of violet leaves can contain as much Vitamin C as several oranges! Historically, these violets were made into teas for comforting grief and heartache. They have anti-inflammatory properties, and can be mashed into a poltice to calm skin irritation (eczema, insect bites, minor cuts and scrapes), or made into a tonic meant to stimulate lymphatic drainage and soothe swollen/tender lymph nodes.

Appalachian Blue Violets are also a traditional Appalachian and Native American folk remedy to soothe dry coughs, sore throats, and bronchial irritation. This is attributed to their natural expectorant and demulcent properties. When turned into a tea or cough syrup, the naturally occurring mucilage coats and moisturizes irritated throats and acts to gently loosen up chest congestion. Infuse your honey with early spring violets for a year-round boost!
