September '25 YOTM: Grand Theft Autumn
$30.00It’s my (Kelley) birthday month! How do you celebrate your birthday? Happily? Melancholically? Angrily? Reflectively? I think I like the idea of birthdays much more than I like the reality of them. The idea of a party, being celebrated, presents, all that fun stuff, sounds so good… in theory. The reality is that I am typically working and I don’t think I’m at an age or central to a friend group where a weekend birthday would drive much turn out. Last year, I think I did it right by convincing my friends to show up to a bar to play bingo for my birthday… on a Tuesday.
I also tend to be reflective! It’s weird to think about myself at other ages and milestones. We all like to think we have capital-T-Taste, but for some of us, that Taste is hard won. Twelve year old’s Kelley’s preferred pop punk bands of the moment were Good Charlotte and Sum 41, and respectfully to those bands, I don’t think those preferences aged particularly well. My favorite of the Fueled By Ramen trio was not the obviously superior My Chemical Romance, but the now-embarrassing Panic! At the Disco (I will defend Ryan Ross’ albums, but my god, Brendan Urie is not to my Taste these days).
This September’s yarn is an ode to growth, entitled GRAND THEFT AUTUMN, off of Fall Out Boy’s (my preferred Fueled by Ramen trio member these days) Take This To Your Grave. We may be celebrating 20 year’s of their second album, Under the Cork Tree, but this was the first song of theirs to make the charts. Even the earliest iterations of ourselves have things we hold onto and grow with!!!!
