Service berries are also rich in anthocyanins - a type of antioxidant that helps to combat oxidative stress. Due to the chemical makeup of these powerhouse berries, their leaves help to regulate blood sugar, making them beneficial for managing metabolic syndrome.
Native American communities used all parts of this plant in many ways: from food to tools to medicine. Service berry bark and roots were boiled to tea or tonic to treat diarrhea, excessive menstrual bleeding, and to help prevent hemorrhaging during child birth. Berry juice was also used as a natural stomach remedy, and as a treatment for eye or ear irritations.

Birds are big fans of the service berry, since their leaves provide reliable shelter and the berry and nectar providesustenance. Service berries are notoriously laid back about their environmental requirements, just requiring well-drained soil and sunlight. They are drought tolerant when established, and only humble ask that you help them avoid root rot. These quiet, hearty and often overlooked berries are an extraordinary symbol of resilience and adaptability.
